He had waited 17 years for this day. For the first time, Adam sat clutching intently, excitedly onto the wheel of the car. He had been eagerly, impatiently waiting for this moment for many years. Ever since his older brother Michael started driving, he had been jealous and couldn't wait to take his car driving lessons. The instructor gave him the order to pull away from his house. His mother waved him away emotionally. She felt a mixture of pride and anxiety for him. She knew how happy this present had meant to him, yet she feared for him as he wasn't always the sharpest tool in the box. Always very clumsy.

Adam turned out of his street and into a narrow cul-de-sac where he would be practicing parking, reversing and 3-point turns. As he spun the wheel and gently pressed on the pedal, he glanced into his mirror and BANG! he felt a vicious bump which sent the instructor as well as himself forwards in their seat and the car came to an immediate halt. He got out to check what had happened and it appeared he had reversed a tad too fast and had hammered into a large plastic bin waiting for the morning collection at the end of someones driveway.

"Not to worry, it's only your first time" said the instructor. A look of sheer panic spread across Adam's face, a tear rolling down his cheek. His big day had been ruined within 5 minutes. He felt he just wanted to give up and go home. Maybe driving wasn't for him. He had taken these car driving lessons with a huge amount of excitement, but it had blown right up in his face.

The instructor placed a sympathetic arm over his shoulder. A heartbreaking look on Adam's face as his head dropped and another tear splashed onto the pavement below.

"Let's carry on, shall we? don't give up son" the instructor was very understanding considering he had just put a dent in the back of his £5000 Ford Fiesta. With a huge gulp, Adam opened the drivers door and climbed valiantly back in and wiped his tears away and pulled off a perfect 3 point turn. Every cloud has a silver lining. They continued on their journey.

The car driving lessons had improved dramatically over the last few weeks. Adam was becoming much more confident and the incident on Hazel Close was little more than a memory. He was driving with ease, increasingly ready for his final test. Until one day. One fateful day. Something terrible happened. Something that would never cease to haunt him, never become a distant memory, but remain a very vivid one.

It was raining, a cloud hung over the village. Conditions on the road were especially dangerous, yet Adam was determined to master the art of driving in the rain, he saw it as advanced car driving lessons. so he ventured out along side his instructor and pedal to the metal raced down the main road. Panic set in for the instructor who clutched painfully hard onto the seat with one hand, the other smashing down on the dashboard vigorously. Adams hands slipped off of the steering wheel, yet his foot felt like lead, weighed down on the pedal. The car swerved violently side to side. He raced past the local school, which he himself had attended. At that very moment, emerging from the school gates he caught a glimpse of his best friend Tony, pulling out on his brand new moped. He slammed on the brakes, but they had little effect in this weather. The car swerved one more time and smashed, with a deafening crunch right through the boy on his scooter. He was dead before he hit the ground. Adam, his head cut and the airbag pressed against his ribs and face, sat motionless, and wept.
